So, a couple of weeks ago we had all the contractors working away on the house - electrical, plumbing, carpentry - and while a lot of good work got done, this was uncovered during the process:
What you see there is a textbook illustration of termite damage. Bear in mind, the house is 60+ years old and has been a single-owner rental property for four decades (meaning renovations and upgrades done over the years were of the minimal, ordinary, between-tenants variety - not the kind where you open up walls).
That up there necessitated this down here:
And that work unfortunately necessitated un-doing some of the nice work the plumber had done. Meanwhile, on the inside:
We are heading down to the job site later today to see what it looks like after a week of closing up.
There are a lot of pluses - for us - in making these discoveries and doing the work now. We are going to be moving into a much more structurally-sound house; a quieter, more energy-efficient house; one with plumbing and wiring we can feel confident about. This particular area of the house is a high-demand area, so I'm doubly glad if this level of rebuilding had to be done, it was done here (water heater, laundry, refrigerator).
Of course it's all adding to the timeline, and the number of IOUs I am mentally chalking up to our friends/landlords is getting basically to infinity, but pretty soon the painting will start, the flooring will go in, and we can commence the fun stuff.
