I'm not going to say much about the new cast announcement. I'm not going to dwell on my conflicted feelings of delight and horror that from September to November, I'm going to have four nights a week of TV to manage (DWTS and SYTYCD? Monday through Thursday every week? Did I mention we needed a higher-capacity DVR?)
All I really want to say is, I can't wait to see what that Iron Chef guy is going to bring. Eye candy for me, yay.
I will add, though, that I think Mya is going to be impressive. She had a small part in "Shall We Dance," with Richard Gere, and acquitted herself well. I have no reason to believe she's had any ballroom training or experience since then, but it's a fair bet that some of what she learned will stick with her. (She was also, I see, in "Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights" and "Chicago." Hmm, cue the "ringer" controversies!)
I've also seen that the pros are to be strictly limited to eight hours a day of rehearsal. Did you ever think, back in the 'Master P" days, that they would have to limit rehearsal time??
Tom Bergeron has referred to the "ballroom bloodbath" coming up at midseason, where they will have double eliminations for three weeks in a row to winnow down the 16-celebrity cast. With all those "stars," I am also eager to see what new (or returning) professionals will be dancing.
One thing that has always puzzled me is that many social ballroom dancers don't watch DWTS. To me, as a teacher, it's an indispensable tool: I get to see what new inventions the pros can bring, as well as what different approaches they use for different partners. As a social dancer, though, I appreciate the entertainment value of the show. For our sport, or hobby, or industry - however we look at it - there is no downside about DWTS. They had me at "liiiiiiive!"
