Just what I needed; here I am, trying to clear out some of my books, and I find a great new one that's probably going to become a series.
"Kiki Strike Inside the Shadow City," by Kirsten Miller, is the most fun I've had reading about adolescent girls since Nancy Drew. It's an adventure featuring five twelve- to fourteen-year-old girls in New York City. It's set in the modern day and has no magic, and yet it's very reminiscent of fantasy adventures from Narnia to Prydain to Hogwarts.
Kiki Strike is the name of the central character, but she isn't the narrator. The narrator is another of the group of adventurers, all of whom are misfits with special talents. The author includes useful tips for adventurers, and interesting historical tidbits about New York City.
I hope this book is a great success and leads to more, even if it means I have to buy more books. I can foresee coming back to this story many times.
