Well, it was kind of ... meh. I was a little let down, and I am going to lay it squarely on the choreographers *coughTony&Cherylcough* because Gilles and Melissa could have really rocked something out, but those freestyle routines ... meh.
Shawn, on the other hand, was terrific. I still think Gilles is the best dancer of the season (or of any other season, frankly, although Mel B would give him a run for his money), but Shawn was last night's true star.
The paso doble face-off really did nothing for me. I would have been more impressed if they had to do a routine using a dance style nobody had yet attempted. Especially in view of the way the choreographers, this season, conflated paso doble and tango to the point of indistinguishability. (hmm, cranky much??)
In case there is anyone reading this who does not read TelevisionWithoutPity's blogger on DWTS, I am sharing a few words from her weecap:
"Hey, producers -- here's an idea for free for next season. Either on the show or even on the website, have Len and/or the other judges go through some of the routines with a telestrator and point out the problems. A bad arm movement here, a missed heel lead there. I would find that fascinating."
100% agreement here. Now let us hope that tonight's "last dance" lets us see, from each contestant, something truly worthy of a ballroom dancing competition. Hmph.
